The Clever Old Lady
Once there lived a wealthy, kind-hearted, but lonely old lady in a beautiful house. She possessed many valuable pieces of furniture and lived comfortably. Sadly, she suddenly became blind. She invited a doctor and promised him a generous reward if he completely restored her eyesight. However, she firmly declared that he would receive nothing if he failed.
The greedy doctor visited her every day. While pretending to treat her carefully, he secretly stole one valuable piece of furniture during each visit. He deliberately delayed her recovery until he had removed almost everything from her house. Finally, after stealing all her precious belongings, he cured her blindness and demanded his large fee.
The wise old lady calmly refused to pay him. The angry doctor took her to court. The judge patiently listened to both sides and then asked the old lady why she refused to honour her promise.
She respectfully replied, "Your Honour, my eyesight has not been fully restored. Before I became blind, I could clearly see my beautiful furniture everywhere. Now I cannot see any of it. Therefore, I believe I am not completely cured."
The judge immediately understood the doctor's dishonest trick and wisely gave the verdict in favour of the old lady. The greedy doctor was ashamed, while honesty and wisdom finally triumphed.
Moral: Greed and dishonesty always lead to shame and punishment.
