Reported Speech: The Essentials

Reported speech is used to convey what someone said indirectly. Here's a breakdown of the key points with examples:

Reporting Verbs:

  • We use verbs like "say," "tell," "ask," "order," "admit," etc. to introduce the reported speech.

Tense Changes:

  • If the reporting verb is in the present tense (say, says), the tense in the reported clause usually stays the same.

    • Example: She says, "I love pizza." -> She says she loves pizza.

  • If the reporting verb is in the past tense (said, told), tenses in the reported clause often shift "back in time."

    • Example: He said, "I'm going to the store." -> He said he was going to the store. (Present Continuous becomes Past Continuous)

Pronoun Changes:

  • Pronouns (I, you, he, etc.) often need to be adjusted based on who is being reported and who is reporting.

    • Example: John said, "My car is broken." -> Sarah said John's car was broken. ("My" refers to John, but Sarah is reporting)

Time and Place Words:

  • Words like "today," "tomorrow," "here," and "there" might need adjustment depending on when the reported speech is being conveyed.

    • Example: "We'll leave tomorrow," she said yesterday. -> She said they would leave the next day. ("Tomorrow" becomes "the next day" because a day has passed)

Optional "That":

  • The word "that" can be used before the reported clause but is often omitted.

    • Example: He said (that) he was tired. (Both options are grammatically correct)

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Questions: When reporting questions, we typically use verbs like "ask" and change the question form into an indirect statement.

    • Example: "Are you coming?" she asked. -> She asked if I was coming.

  • Orders and Requests: Similar to questions, reported orders and requests use verbs like "tell" or "ask" and adjust the sentence structure.

    • Example: "Go to your room!" he said. -> He told me to go to my room.

By understanding these concepts, you can effectively convert direct speech into reported speech and accurately convey what someone said.
