ARTICLES – COMPLETE NOTES
1. What are Articles?
- Articles are determiners used before nouns to show whether the noun is general or specific.
There are three articles in English:
- A
- An
- The
- There is also the use of No Article (Ø).
2. INDEFINITE ARTICLES – A / AN
Meaning
- A / An refer to one person or thing that is not specific.
Rule 1: Use A before words that begin with a consonant sound
- Examples:
- a boy
- a girl
- a school
- a university (sounds like yu)
- a one-rupee coin (sounds like won)
Rule 2: Use AN before words that begin with a vowel sound
- Examples:
- an apple
- an orange
- an umbrella
- an honest man (silent h)
- an hour (silent h)
Rule 3: A / An are used with singular countable nouns
- Examples:
- a pen
- an elephant
- a book
- ❌ Incorrect:
- a milk ❌
- an advice ❌
Rule 4: Used when something is mentioned for the first time
- Examples:
- I saw a dog in the street.
- She bought an umbrella.
Rule 5: Used to show profession, job, or role
- Examples:
- He is a teacher.
- She is an engineer.
- My father is a doctor.
Rule 6: Used in expressions of quantity, price, speed
- Examples:
- twice a day
- 50 rupees a kilo
- 60 km an hour
Rule 7: Used in exclamatory sentences
- Examples:
- What a beautiful flower!
- What an interesting story!
3. DEFINITE ARTICLE – THE
Meaning
- The refers to a particular or specific person or thing.
Rule 1: Used when the noun is already known or mentioned earlier
- Examples:
- I saw a dog. The dog was barking.
- She bought a pen. The pen is blue.
Rule 2: Used when there is only one of its kind
- Examples:
- the Sun
- the Moon
- the Earth
- the sky
Rule 3: Used with superlative degree
- Examples:
- the best student
- the tallest building
- the most beautiful girl
Rule 4: Used with ordinal numbers
- Examples:
- the first prize
- the second chapter
- the last page
Rule 5: Used with rivers, seas, oceans, deserts, mountain ranges
- Examples:
- the Ganga
- the Bay of Bengal
- the Indian Ocean
- the Sahara Desert
- the Himalayas
Rule 6: Used with names of newspapers, holy books, ships, hotels
- Examples:
- the Hindu
- the Times of India
- the Ramayana
- the Taj Mahal
- the Titanic
Rule 7: Used with unique institutions
- Examples:
- the Parliament
- the Supreme Court
- the Government
Rule 8: Used before adjectives to refer to a class of people
- Examples:
- the poor
- the rich
- the blind
- the old
Rule 9: Used with musical instruments
- Examples:
- She plays the violin.
- He plays the piano.
4. ZERO ARTICLE / NO ARTICLE (Ø)
Meaning
- Sometimes no article is used before a noun.
Rule 1: No article before plural nouns used generally
- Examples:
- Dogs are faithful animals.
- Students should study well.
Rule 2: No article before uncountable nouns used generally
- Examples:
- Milk is good for health.
- Knowledge is power.
- Honesty is the best policy.
Rule 3: No article before proper nouns
- Examples:
- Ravi is my friend.
- India is a great country.
- Monday is a holiday.
Rule 4: No article before names of languages and subjects
- Examples:
- He speaks English.
- She studies Mathematics.
- We learn Science.
Rule 5: No article before meals
- Examples:
- I eat breakfast at 8 a.m.
- We had lunch together.
- Dinner is ready.
- (But: The dinner was delicious – specific)
Rule 6: No article before games and sports
- Examples:
- He plays cricket.
- She likes tennis.
- We play football.
Rule 7: No article before institutions when used for their purpose
- Examples:
- He goes to school.
- She is in hospital.
- The boy is in jail.
- (But: The school is big – building)
Rule 8: No article before abstract nouns used generally
- Examples:
- Truth always wins.
- Courage is needed.
- Beauty attracts everyone.
