Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder, But
Maya and Leo were the best of friends. They did everything together - building forts in the living room, catching fireflies at dusk, and sharing secrets under the shade of the old oak tree. But then, Leo's dad got a new job, and they had to move across the country.
The day they said goodbye, tears welled up in their eyes. Maya clutched a worn seashell Leo had given her, a symbol of their countless beach adventures. Letters flew back and forth at first, filled with stories and jokes. Maya would trace the smooth curve of the seashell every time she missed Leo's laughter.
Slowly, though, the letters became fewer. New friends and new routines filled their days. Maya missed Leo terribly, but the sharp pang of absence dulled with time.
One summer, years later, Maya's family planned a trip to the coast. As they walked on the beach, a familiar figure skipped towards them. It was Leo, a bit taller, his hair bleached a bit blonder by the sun. Recognition dawned, and a huge smile broke across Maya's face.
The seashell, worn smooth from years of holding, felt warm in her hand. In that moment, the years of separation melted away. They spent the day catching up, their laughter echoing on the beach. The distance hadn't dimmed their friendship; it had made their reunion all the sweeter. "Absence may make the heart grow fonder," Leo said that evening, holding a similar shell he'd kept, "but some friendships, like ours, shine even brighter when brought back together."
And under the setting sun, with the sound of the waves crashing in their ears, Maya knew their friendship, like the smooth seashell, would forever be a reminder of the love that bloomed even in their time apart.
