What is a Preposition?

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in the sentence. It usually indicates direction, place, time, cause, manner, or possession.  


2. Types of Preposition


a) Prepositions of Place: show the position or location of something.  

Examples:  

The book is on the table.  

She is sitting in the room.  

The school is near the park.  


b) Prepositions of Time: show when something happens.  

Examples:  

He was born on Monday.  

They arrived at 7 PM.  

We have exams in June.  


c) Prepositions of Direction or Movement: show movement from one place to another.  

Examples:  

She is going to the market.  

He ran towards the finish line.  

The cat jumped onto the bed.  


d) Prepositions of Manner, Cause, or Reason: show how or why something happens.  

Examples:  

She won with great effort.  

They fought because of a misunderstanding.  

He acted out of kindness.  


e) Prepositions of Possession: show ownership.  

Examples:  

The keys of the car are missing.  

This is a picture of my family.  


f) Prepositions of Comparison & Contrast:  

Examples:  

She is taller **than** her brother.  

Unlike his father, he is very quiet.  


g) Prepositions of Agent or Instrument: indicate the means or agent performing an action.  

Examples:  

The letter was written by her.  

The cake was cut with a knife.  


3. Common Preposition + Noun Phrases: 

By chance: I met him by chance.  

In trouble: He is **in trouble.  

On purpose: She did it on purpose.  

At risk: The patient is at risk.  


4. Prepositional Phrases:  

A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition + noun/pronoun.  

Examples:  

The book **on the shelf is mine.  

She walked along the river.  

He sat beside her.  


5. Common Preposition Errors & Corrections

6. Difference Between "In," "On," and "At"

On: 

on a surface (on the table)

on Monday, 

on my birthday

  

At: 

at a point (at the door)

at 5 PM, 

at noon etc.
